No, GTA 6 has no confirmed crossplay between PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar Games has not announced crossplay or cross-progression for the November 19, 2026 launch, and neither feature appears on any official page. Until the company says otherwise, we treat GTA 6 as a game where PlayStation and Xbox players stay separate.
What Rockstar and the store listings officially say
Rockstar has confirmed a short list of facts about Grand Theft Auto VI. Crossplay is not one of them. Every public statement and trailer description covers the platforms, the release date and the story setup. None mentions online features in any detail.
This table shows the confirmed facts next to the gaps.
| Detail | Status | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Platforms | PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Official (Rockstar) |
| Release date | November 19, 2026 | Official (Rockstar) |
| PC version | Not announced | No official statement |
| Crossplay (PS5 and Xbox) | Not announced | No official statement |
| Cross-progression | Not announced | No official statement |
| Online mode details | Not announced | No official statement |
| Price and editions | Not announced | No official statement |
| Pre-orders | Not open | Store pages show wishlist only |
| Age rating (ESRB/PEGI) | Not yet rated | No rating issued |
The PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings let you add the game to your wishlist. They do not list multiplayer features, player counts or a crossplay tag. When a game supports cross-platform play, both stores usually note it in the feature list. We will check those listings again when pre-orders open.
What has been shown so far
Rockstar released the first trailer on December 4, 2023. It went live a day earlier than planned after the video leaked online. The second trailer arrived on May 6, 2025, alongside a large batch of screenshots and character profiles on Rockstar’s website.
Both trailers focus on the single-player story. They introduce the two lead characters, Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval, and the state of Leonida, a fictional version of Florida built around Vice City. Neither trailer shows online play, co-op or a multiplayer menu.
GTA 6 release timeline so far
The release date has moved twice. Every delay pushed back any announcement about online features, since Rockstar tends to reveal those close to launch.
| Date | Event |
|---|---|
| December 4, 2023 | Trailer 1 released, “2025” window confirmed |
| May 2, 2025 | First delay announced, new date May 26, 2026 |
| May 6, 2025 | Trailer 2 released |
| November 6, 2025 | Second delay announced, new date November 19, 2026 |
| November 19, 2026 | Current launch date (PS5, Xbox Series X|S) |
Rockstar said the extra time was needed to finish the game to the expected standard. Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, confirmed the November 2026 date in its earnings report the same day. If you are planning for launch night, our page on GTA 6 release time covers the expected unlock times in each region once Rockstar confirms them.
Crossplay in GTA Online: how it worked
The best guide to Rockstar’s plans is its own history. GTA Online ran from October 2013 across three console generations and PC. It never offered crossplay between platform families, and it still does not today.
| Version | Launch | Crossplay | Character transfer |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS3 / Xbox 360 | October 1, 2013 | None | One-time move to PS4, Xbox One or PC (closed 2017) |
| PS4 / Xbox One | November 18, 2014 | None | One-time move to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S |
| PC (original, now Legacy) | April 14, 2015 | None | One-time move to PC Enhanced |
| PS5 / Xbox Series X|S | March 15, 2022 | None | Not applicable |
| PC Enhanced | March 4, 2025 | None | Not applicable |
A few patterns stand out.
Transfers, not crossplay. Rockstar has always offered a way to move your character forward to a new platform. It has never let two platforms share a session. Even PS4 and PS5 players, on the same PlayStation Network, cannot join each other in GTA Online. The same split applies to Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
Transfers were one-way and time-limited. When players moved from PS3 or Xbox 360, the option stayed open for a few years and then closed. Your character moved once, and the old save could not sync back.
Your Rockstar account handled the move. Each transfer ran through a Rockstar Games account, previously called the Social Club. That account system is the obvious backbone for any future cross-progression in GTA 6, if Rockstar builds it.
Red Dead Online followed the same rules
Rockstar’s other online game, Red Dead Online, launched in beta in November 2018 on PS4 and Xbox One. The PC version followed in November 2019. It never gained crossplay or cross-progression between platforms either.
| Rockstar online game | Platforms | Crossplay | Cross-progression |
|---|---|---|---|
| GTA Online | PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PC | No | No (one-time transfers only) |
| Red Dead Online | PS4, Xbox One, PC (plays on PS5/Series via backward compatibility) | No | No |
Two big online games, more than a decade of updates, and zero crossplay. That is a clear track record, and it is why we do not expect crossplay at GTA 6’s launch unless Rockstar announces it.
Crossplay rumors and leaks: what we actually know
No reliable source has reported that GTA 6 will include crossplay. Here is how the claims you might see online stack up.
Official sources (Rockstar, Take-Two, platform stores). Silent on crossplay. Take-Two executives have answered investor questions about the release date and the PC version timing, but not about cross-platform features.
Proven industry reporters. We have not seen a reporter with a strong track record on Rockstar publish a claim about GTA 6 crossplay. Reporting from established outlets has focused on the delays, development conditions and the release schedule.
The 2022 leak. In September 2022, early development footage of GTA 6 was stolen and posted online. Rockstar confirmed the breach and said the footage came from an early build. Outlets that covered it, including Bloomberg and The Verge, described story and gameplay test clips. None of that coverage reported anything conclusive about crossplay.
Anonymous accounts and social media. Posts claiming GTA 6 “will have crossplay” or “won’t have crossplay” mostly come from anonymous accounts with no proven record on Rockstar. Treat them as speculation.
Our position: until Rockstar or a store listing confirms it, the answer is no.
Why crossplay is harder for GTA than for other games
Plenty of big games support crossplay. Our explainer on cross-platform gaming covers how it works under the hood. Fortnite connects PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, PC and mobile, and our page on crossplay on Fortnite explains its settings. Shooters like Call of Duty and Arc Raiders also link the major platforms. So why has Rockstar held back?
Separate economies
GTA Online runs on in-game money that players can buy with real cash through Shark Cards. Each platform holder takes a cut of those purchases. Sharing one economy across PlayStation and Xbox means agreeing how purchases on one store work in sessions with players from another. Epic solved this for Fortnite, but it took negotiation with Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo over several years.
Cheating and moderation
GTA Online on PC has a long history of mod menus and cheaters. A console-only launch removes most of that risk. If GTA 6 arrives on PS5 and Xbox only, PS5 and Xbox crossplay would be technically simpler than any setup that includes PC. That is a real point in favor of console crossplay, but Rockstar has not commented on it.
Server design
Rockstar’s online sessions have always been smaller than those in battle royale games. GTA Online public lobbies hold up to 30 players on current consoles and PC. Splitting a player base by platform matters less when each lobby is that size and the overall audience is huge.
The Xbox Series S question
Any shared session has to run on the weakest console in it. Developers have to make sure Xbox Series S can keep pace with PS5 and Series X in the same world. Rockstar has not discussed Series S performance for GTA 6 at all.
What about cross-progression?
Cross-progression and crossplay are different features. Crossplay lets you join players on another platform. Cross-progression lets you carry your save, unlocks and purchases from one platform to another.
For GTA 6, both are unannounced. A few points are worth knowing:
- Story saves. GTA V let players carry Story Mode saves forward to new console generations in limited cases. Nothing is confirmed for GTA 6.
- Online characters. Rockstar has never confirmed whether GTA Online characters, money or vehicles will move to GTA 6’s online mode. There is no official word on rewards for current GTA Online players either.
- PS5 to Xbox (or back). Rockstar has never offered cross-progression between PlayStation and Xbox. Its transfers only moved players forward within the same platform family or to PC.
If cross-progression arrives, expect it to run through your Rockstar Games account. Linking your console accounts now costs nothing and means you are ready if Rockstar makes players eligible for any launch bonus or transfer.
How to link your console to a Rockstar Games account
- Sign in or create an account at Rockstar’s website.
- Open Settings, then Linked Accounts.
- Select PlayStation Network or Xbox.
- Sign in to your console account to confirm.
Will GTA 6 come to PC, and would that change crossplay?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version. Its past pattern is console first, PC later. GTA V reached PS3 and Xbox 360 in September 2013 and PC in April 2015. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on PS4 and Xbox One in October 2018 and on PC in November 2019.
Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has pointed to this history when asked about PC, without giving a date. A later PC release would raise its own crossplay questions, especially around cheating. For now, PC players cannot play GTA 6 at all at launch.
Pre-order GTA 6 on PS5 and Xbox
Pre-orders are not open. As of our last check, Rockstar has not announced the price, the editions or any pre-order bonuses. The PlayStation Store and Xbox Store pages only offer a wishlist button.
When pre-orders open, the store pages should also list features like online play, player counts and any crossplay support. We will update this page at that point.
Good to know
Wishlisting GTA 6 on the PlayStation or Xbox store means the store can notify you automatically when pre-orders and preloads go live. Check our page on GTA 6 file size before launch day, so you have enough free space on your console.
What to expect between now and November
Based on how Rockstar handled GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2, here is what we expect to see before launch:
- More trailers and screenshots. Rockstar has released two trailers so far. More marketing usually ramps up in the months before release.
- Pre-order opening. This normally brings the price, editions and full store listings.
- Age ratings. ESRB and PEGI ratings usually appear a few months before launch.
- Online details. Rockstar announced GTA Online separately from GTA V, and the online mode went live about two weeks after the game launched in 2013. GTA 6’s online plans could follow a similar schedule.
The crossplay answer will likely land in step 4. Until then, the only accurate answer is that it is not confirmed.
FAQ
Is GTA crossplay on Xbox and PC?
No. GTA Online does not support crossplay between Xbox and PC, or between any two platform families. Xbox players can only join other Xbox players on the same console generation. GTA 6 is not coming to PC at launch, so the question does not apply there yet.
Did GTA 5 make $1 billion dollars in 3 days?
Yes. GTA V earned about $815.7 million on its first day, September 17, 2013, and passed $1 billion in sales within three days. Guinness World Records recognized it as the fastest entertainment product to reach that mark at the time.
Will GTA 5 ever get crossplay?
Rockstar has not announced any plans to add crossplay to GTA V or GTA Online. The game has run for more than a decade without it, through several console generations and a 2025 PC upgrade. We do not expect it to change, with the company’s focus now on GTA 6.
Can Xbox and PS5 play together?
It depends on the game. Many titles support PS5 and Xbox crossplay, including Fortnite, Call of Duty and Arc Raiders. GTA Online does not. For GTA 6, Rockstar has not confirmed it either way.
Is GTA 6 cross-gen?
No. GTA 6 is only confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version, so cross-gen play is not a factor.
Will my GTA Online character transfer to GTA 6?
Not confirmed. Rockstar has not said whether GTA Online characters, money or items will carry over. Its previous transfers only moved characters to newer versions of the same game.
Does GTA 6 have co-op?
Rockstar has not announced co-op or any details of an online mode. The trailers show the story campaign with Lucia and Jason. Online features remain unannounced.
