Rockstar Games has not announced an official GTA 6 file size for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, and no platform store listing shows a download or install figure yet. Every number circulating on Reddit, X and Bluesky is a rumor or an estimate. Below I set out what is confirmed, what is not, and the Rockstar benchmarks I use to plan storage ahead of the November 19, 2026 launch.
What Rockstar has confirmed so far
The confirmed facts about Grand Theft Auto VI are fewer than the volume of coverage suggests. On November 6, 2025, Rockstar announced a second delay and moved the release from May 26, 2026 to November 19, 2026, after an earlier move from the original fall 2025 window. The confirmed platforms are PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar has not announced a PC version, and it has not published a file size, a preload schedule, a price or a list of editions with their storage requirements.
The publicly confirmed content comes from two trailers. Trailer 1 arrived in December 2023. Trailer 2 followed on May 6, 2025, and Rockstar said it was captured entirely on a PlayStation 5, using a mix of gameplay and cutscenes. Those trailers established the two leads, Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, and the setting: the fictional state of Leonida, built around a modern Vice City. Rockstar’s official website added character and location profiles at the same time. None of this material includes technical specifications.
| Detail | Status (as of December 2025) | Source type |
|---|---|---|
| Release date | November 19, 2026 | Official (Rockstar) |
| Platforms | PS5, Xbox Series X|S | Official (Rockstar) |
| PC version | Not announced | n/a |
| Download size | Not announced | n/a |
| Install size | Not announced | n/a |
| Preload size and start date | Not announced | n/a |
| Physical disc count | Not announced | n/a |
| Online mode details | Not announced | n/a |
I will update this table when Sony’s PlayStation Store or Microsoft’s Xbox Store lists a size, since those listings are usually the first official source to show one. Rockstar has historically confirmed technical details close to launch rather than months ahead.
GTA 6 file size by platform
Because no store listing shows a figure, the per-platform table below is mostly empty by design. I have filled in the hardware facts that are confirmed, because the real question most readers are asking is whether their console will have room.
| Platform | Download size | Install size | Preload size | Built-in storage (usable, approx.) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (original, 825 GB) | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced | About 667 GB |
| PS5 Slim (1 TB) | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced | About 848 GB |
| PS5 Pro (2 TB) | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced | Roughly 1.8 TB+ |
| Xbox Series X (1 TB) | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced | About 802 GB |
| Xbox Series S (512 GB) | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced | About 364 GB |
| PC | Not announced (no PC version confirmed) | Not announced | Not announced | n/a |
The Xbox Series S line deserves a note. Microsoft’s Smart Delivery system lets developers ship Series S builds without the highest-resolution texture packs, and some cross-generation games install smaller on Series S as a result. Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 will take that approach, so I would not assume a smaller Series S install until the Xbox Store confirms one.
Good to know
On PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, a physical disc does not let you skip the install. The full game copies to the internal SSD (or a compatible expansion drive), so a disc buyer needs the same free space as a digital buyer.
The benchmark I trust most: Rockstar’s own recent games
When an official figure is missing, the most defensible comparison is Rockstar’s own catalogue, because the same studio, engine lineage (the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine, or RAGE) and asset pipeline produced them. I use storage requirements from Steam because they are published, fixed and easy to verify, though they are PC figures and console installs differ.
| Game | Platform listing | Listed storage requirement | Original release |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Dead Redemption 2 | Steam (PC) | 150 GB available space | October 26, 2018 (consoles), November 2019 (PC) |
| Grand Theft Auto V Enhanced | Steam (PC) | 105 GB available space | March 4, 2025 (PC Enhanced) |
Red Dead Redemption 2 is the more useful reference point. It was Rockstar’s most recent fully new open world, it launched in October 2018 for PS4 and Xbox One, and its PC version asks for 150 GB of free space. GTA V Enhanced is a remastered version of a 2013 game, so its 105 GB requirement reflects older underlying content upgraded with newer graphics features rather than a ground-up modern world.
What I take from this is direction rather than a number. Rockstar’s last new open world needed well over 100 GB on PC, and GTA 6 is a newer, denser project built for consoles with far more memory and faster storage. I expect it to be at least as demanding as Red Dead Redemption 2 on raw content, though compression on current hardware can offset some of that growth. That is an inference from published benchmarks, not a leak and not a confirmed figure.
Leaks and rumors: what has been claimed and how much weight each deserves
Search results for the GTA 6 file size are dominated by leak headlines, so it is worth sorting them by reliability. I grade each source below and phrase the claim to match.
The 200 GB+ build claim (anonymous account, unproven record)
The most widely shared number comes from an account called Cyberleek, which claimed a GTA 6 build was larger than 200 GB. This is an anonymous source without an established record of accurate Rockstar claims, and the claim did not come with any verifiable evidence that outlets could confirm. Even if the number was accurate for a specific build, a development or test build is a poor guide to retail size: internal builds often contain uncompressed assets, debug tools, multiple versions of the same content and unoptimised audio that never ship in the final package.
Reddit threads and community estimates (community speculation)
Subreddits such as r/GTA6 and r/GTA6unmoderated host regular threads claiming the file size “might have been found”, usually based on readings of footage, job listings or assumptions about map size. These are community estimates. Some are thoughtful, but none rest on an official source, and they routinely contradict one another. I read them as speculation, not data.
The September 2022 leak (confirmed breach, not a size source)
In September 2022, early development footage of GTA 6 was posted online after a network intrusion, and Rockstar publicly confirmed the breach and said the footage showed early, work-in-progress gameplay. Outlets including Bloomberg reported on what the clips showed: an unfinished Vice City setting and an early version of the dual-protagonist structure. Headlines that tie a “confirmed” file size to that gameplay leaker overstate what the material contained. Footage from an early build several years before release reveals nothing reliable about the shipping download, and I do not treat any size figure attributed to it as credible.
Retailer listings (placeholder data)
Retailers sometimes publish product pages with storage or technical fields filled in before the platform holders do. If a figure appears on Amazon or another store before Sony, Microsoft or Rockstar list one, I treat it as a placeholder, because pre-order listings commonly use estimated or template values that change before launch.
| Claim source | Reliability grade | How I treat it |
|---|---|---|
| Rockstar, PlayStation Store, Xbox Store | Official | Accurate for the date listed |
| Bloomberg and similar established reporters | Proven reporter | Credible for context, has not reported a size |
| Reddit and forum estimates | Community speculation | Not a source for numbers |
| Anonymous accounts (e.g., Cyberleek) | Anonymous, unproven record | Unverified claim only |
| Retailer pre-order pages | Placeholder | Ignore until matched by a store listing |
The cost of a massive open world: what drives the final size
A game’s install size comes from a handful of predictable components, and looking at them explains why estimates for GTA 6 vary so much. The biggest contributors in modern open-world games are textures, audio, geometry and pre-rendered video.
Textures and geometry. Higher-resolution textures grow storage requirements quickly, and a dense city like Vice City needs enormous numbers of unique surfaces, signs, interiors and vehicles. Trailer 2’s close-up character shots and busy beach crowds suggest asset detail beyond anything Rockstar shipped last generation.
Audio. Rockstar games carry large audio libraries: licensed radio stations, talk shows, thousands of lines of pedestrian dialogue and fully voiced story scenes. Localised voice tracks, if included, add more. Some publishers let players download only the languages they need, which shrinks installs; Rockstar has not said whether it will do that.
Cutscenes and video. Pre-rendered video is costly in storage terms. Rockstar’s recent games lean heavily on real-time cutscenes, which keeps video smaller, but in-game TV and similar content still takes space.
Online content. Rockstar has not detailed an online mode for GTA 6. If an online component ships at launch or arrives later, its assets would add to the installed size over time, as GTA Online did to GTA V across a decade of updates.
Day-one and post-launch patches. Big Rockstar launches have typically shipped with a day-one update, and those downloads count toward both bandwidth and storage on launch day.
Hope for a reasonable file size: what works in the game’s favour
Several hardware features of PS5 and Xbox Series X|S push install sizes down, and they are the reason I would not simply extrapolate from last-generation installs.
The PS5 includes hardware decompression built around the Kraken format, and Xbox Series X|S uses the Xbox Velocity Architecture with hardware decompression support, including BCPack for textures. Both let developers store data more compactly without a performance cost when loading.
The other factor is duplication. Games designed for spinning hard drives on PS4 and Xbox One often stored the same asset many times across the disc so the drive head would not have to travel far to read it. On SSD-only consoles, that duplication is unnecessary. A game built only for current hardware, as GTA 6 is, can drop that overhead entirely. This is the main reason I would not assume a straight-line jump from Red Dead Redemption 2’s size to an enormous GTA 6 figure.
Those savings are real, but a much larger and more detailed world can still outgrow them. My position is straightforward: a figure above 100 GB is consistent with every benchmark, but no specific number deserves trust until a store listing confirms it.
How much free space I would keep ready
Since the official requirement is not announced, I plan around margins rather than a number. The practical approach is to keep generous free space, because the install, a day-one patch and any temporary space the console needs during installation all compete for the same SSD.
On a 1 TB PS5 Slim or Xbox Series X, there is room for GTA 6 alongside a modest library, provided the drive is not already near full. The original 825 GB PS5 leaves about 667 GB usable, and the 512 GB Xbox Series S leaves about 364 GB usable, so owners of those models are the ones most likely to need to clear games before launch. Large live-service games are often the biggest storage users on a console, and removing one or two typically frees the most space quickly.
How to check your free storage
- PS5: open Settings, then Storage, then Console Storage.
- Xbox Series X|S: open Settings, then System, then Storage devices.
- Note the free space shown, then sort installed games by size.
- Delete or move the largest titles you are not playing.
Expanding storage on PS5
The PS5 supports an internal M.2 SSD expansion slot. Sony’s requirements call for a PCIe Gen4 NVMe drive, with a recommended sequential read speed of 5,500 MB/s or faster, and a heatsink or cooling structure. PS5 games must be played from internal storage or a compatible M.2 drive. A USB external drive can store PS5 games to save re-downloading them, but it cannot run them.
Expanding storage on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox Series X|S uses proprietary Storage Expansion Cards that plug into a dedicated slot and run Series X|S optimised games at full speed. A standard USB external drive can hold Series X|S games for storage but cannot run them, so GTA 6 would need the internal SSD or an expansion card.
Good to know
Moving games you are not playing to a cheap USB drive before launch keeps them off your SSD without forcing a re-download later, which matters if your internet plan has a data cap.
Preloading: what to expect
Rockstar has not announced whether GTA 6 will support preloading or when it would begin. Its recent launches did offer preloads for digital pre-orders shortly before release, and both PlayStation and Xbox support the feature, so a preload is likely for digital buyers. The size of that preload will only be known when the store listing appears.
A preload typically downloads most of the game ahead of time, with a final unlock and often a smaller update at launch. It does not reduce the space you need, but it shifts the download away from launch day, when servers are busiest. If you plan to play at the moment the game unlocks, our separate guide on GTA 6 release time covers the regional unlock schedule once Rockstar confirms it.
Physical edition: disc count is not confirmed
Rockstar has not confirmed how many discs the physical edition will use. Both PS5 and Xbox Series X use Ultra HD Blu-ray discs that hold up to 100 GB per disc, so any install above that capacity would require a second disc or a mandatory download.
Two other physical-edition points matter for storage planning. The PS5 Digital Edition, the digital PS5 Slim and the Xbox Series S have no disc drive, so owners of those consoles will download the full game regardless. And on every current console, a disc copy still installs fully to internal storage, as noted above.
PC: not announced
Rockstar has not announced GTA 6 for PC, so there are no PC system requirements, file size or storage specifications. The studio’s history points to a later release: GTA V arrived on PC in April 2015, about a year and a half after its 2013 console launch, and Red Dead Redemption 2 reached PC in November 2019, about a year after consoles. Neither pattern is a promise, and I would not plan around a PC date until Rockstar names one.
When a PC version is announced, its requirements will appear on Rockstar’s site and store pages such as Steam. PC installs for Rockstar games have historically been larger than console installs, with Red Dead Redemption 2 asking for 150 GB on Steam.
Where official size information will appear first
From experience with Rockstar launches and with how platform holders operate, these are the places a confirmed GTA 6 file size will show up, roughly in the order I expect:
- PlayStation Store and Xbox Store listings. Both stores display download size on product pages once a publisher supplies it, often around the time preloads open.
- Rockstar Newswire and the official Rockstar support site. Rockstar publishes technical FAQs and preload details there and on its official social accounts.
- Pre-load notifications on console. When a preload begins, the download queue shows the exact size for your console.
Sign up for store pre-order notifications if you want the earliest confirmation. Anything that appears elsewhere first, especially on rumor accounts, should be read with the reliability grades above in mind.
FAQ
What is the official GTA 6 file size?
There is no official GTA 6 file size yet. Rockstar, the PlayStation Store and the Xbox Store had not published a download or install figure for PS5 or Xbox Series X|S as of December 2025.
Is GTA 6 really over 200 GB?
That figure comes from an anonymous account with no established track record, and it was not verified by established outlets. Development builds are usually much larger than retail releases, so I do not treat it as a reliable guide.
How much space should I free up for GTA 6?
The requirement is not announced. Based on Rockstar’s own benchmarks, such as Red Dead Redemption 2’s 150 GB PC requirement on Steam, I would plan for well over 100 GB of free space plus room for a day-one patch, and confirm once the store listing goes live.
Can I play GTA 6 from an external hard drive?
No external USB drive can run PS5 or Xbox Series X|S optimised games. You need the internal SSD, a compatible M.2 drive on PS5, or a Storage Expansion Card on Xbox Series X|S. USB drives work only for storing games.
Will the GTA 6 disc let me skip the download?
No. On PS5 and Xbox Series X, a disc copy installs fully to internal storage, and a day-one update will likely still need downloading. The number of discs has not been confirmed.
Will GTA 6 be smaller on Xbox Series S?
Not confirmed. Smart Delivery allows smaller Series S builds without the highest-resolution assets, but Rockstar has not said whether GTA 6 will use that.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC, and how big will it be?
Rockstar has not announced a PC version, so there is no PC file size or system requirements. Rockstar’s past games reached PC roughly a year or more after their console launches.
