Square Enix has published only one storage figure for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE so far: the Steam system requirements list 15 GB of available space for both the minimum and recommended tiers, while the PlayStation Store and Nintendo eShop listings do not show a size yet. The game is set for October 22, 2026, and store pages normally gain a size figure in the final weeks before launch, usually when preload opens. This page tracks what is confirmed, what is only reported, and what you should plan for on each system.
Every figure that exists right now
The short version: just one. Only one official storage number has been published for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE as of the last check, the 15 GB of available space listed on Steam, with no PS5 or Switch install size, preload size or further “free space required” figure yet. That is not unusual this far from launch. Square Enix tends to withhold the storage line on its Steam system requirements until the build is close to final, and PlayStation and Nintendo store pages only display a size once the download package has been submitted and certified.
What is confirmed is the release date, October 22, 2026, and the platform list visible through official store listings: Windows PC via Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and Nintendo Switch. Pre-orders are open on those stores, which is what prompts most of the “how many GB is it” searches, because people want to know if they need to clear space before the pre-order becomes a download.
Here is the per-platform status table. It will be updated the moment any store adds a number.
| Platform | Install size | Preload size | Free space listed | Status (Sept 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PC (Steam, Windows) | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Awaiting final requirements |
| PS5 | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Store page live, no size |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Store page live, no size |
| Nintendo Switch | Not listed | Not listed | Not listed | Store page live, no size |
| Xbox Series X/S | Not announced | Not announced | Not announced | No listing found |
If you see a specific gigabyte figure for this game on a wiki or a social post, check where it came from. Nothing official has produced one, so any number circulating now is either a guess, a placeholder scraped from an unfinished store entry, or confused with another Final Fantasy title.
Where the official size will appear first
Each store exposes the download size in a different place, and they do not update at the same time. If you want the real number the minute it lands, these are the spots to watch.
| Store | Where the size shows | Typical timing before launch |
|---|---|---|
| Steam | “Storage” line under System Requirements on the product page | Often 1 to 3 weeks out, sometimes launch week |
| PlayStation Store (PS5) | “File size” under the game details on the web or console store | Usually when preload opens, 48 hours before release |
| Nintendo eShop (Switch 2 and Switch) | “Required space” on the product page, also shown when you queue a pre-purchase download | Frequently appears a few days to a week ahead |
Two practical notes. The Steam figure is a minimum free-space requirement, not a precise install size, and it is routinely larger than the actual footprint because Valve’s unpacking process needs headroom. The PlayStation Store figure is the compressed download package at listing time and can shift after a day-one patch, which is why it pays to check twice: once at preload and once after launch.
How to check the live size on each store
- Steam: open the FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE page, scroll to System Requirements, read the Storage line.
- PS5: open the game in the PlayStation Store app, press down to the details panel, look for File size.
- Switch 2 or Switch: open the eShop listing, scroll to the specifications block, read Required space.
- If a line says “to be announced” or is blank, the number has not been submitted yet.
Preload: PS5 reported for October 20, nothing official

Several community posts claim the PS5 version will preload from October 20, 2026, two days ahead of launch. That matches Sony’s standard window for first-party and major third-party releases, so it is a reasonable expectation. It is not an official statement. Square Enix has not posted preload timing on its own channels, and the PlayStation Store page does not yet show a preload date.
Treat the October 20 date as community-sourced and unconfirmed. The PS5 store will display an explicit “Preload available” tag once Sony enables it, and that is the only source worth trusting for timing.
Steam preload is a separate question. Valve lets publishers enable encrypted preloads for pre-purchased titles, and Square Enix has used this for recent big releases, but it is a per-game decision. No preload flag is visible on the Steam listing at the time of checking. Nintendo’s eShop normally allows pre-purchased games to download ahead of launch automatically once the package is live, so Switch 2 and Switch owners are the most likely to get an early download without any announcement.
| Platform | Preload reported? | Source quality | Official confirmation |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | October 20, 2026 (two days early) | Community posts only | No |
| PC (Steam) | No report | n/a | No |
| Switch 2 | No report, auto-download likely | Based on eShop norms | No |
| Switch | No report, auto-download likely | Based on eShop norms | No |
Switch 2: the one platform where the download is mandatory
This is the detail most pre-order buyers miss. Reports from retailer listings and box art indicate the Switch 2 physical edition of FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE ships as a Game-Key Card, while the original Switch physical edition contains the full game on the cartridge. Square Enix has not spelled this out in a press release, so grade it as retailer-sourced with strong supporting evidence rather than publisher-confirmed.
Why it matters for storage: a Game-Key Card holds no game data. It is a license on a card. When you insert it, the Switch 2 downloads the entire game from Nintendo’s servers to internal storage or a microSD Express card, and the card must stay inserted to play. So on Switch 2 there is no “physical to save space” option. The download size, whatever it turns out to be, applies to every Switch 2 owner regardless of format.
| Format | Nintendo Switch | Nintendo Switch 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Physical cartridge contents | Full game (reported) | Game-Key Card, no game data (reported) |
| Download required to play | Patches only | Full game |
| Storage you need to reserve | Patch size only | Full install size |
| Card required in slot to play | Yes | Yes |
| Works on the other console | Switch cartridges run on Switch 2 | Switch 2 cards do not run on Switch |
Switch 2 internal storage is 256 GB, and a chunk of that is taken by the system. If you have been collecting Game-Key Card titles, this release will compete with them for space. Budget for a microSD Express card if you have not already.
Good to know
Standard microSD cards from an original Switch do not run Switch 2 games. Only microSD Express cards work for Switch 2 titles, so check the label before you buy one to make room for this download.
PC: what the Steam listing shows and what it does not
The Steam page for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE is live with pre-purchase available, and it is the single most useful place to watch for the file size because Square Enix publishes a Storage line there for every Windows release. At the last check that line is absent, along with the rest of the detailed minimum and recommended specs.
When the specs land, expect the usual Square Enix format: a minimum tier and a recommended tier, with Storage listed once and often with a note about SSD being required. Recent large Square Enix PC releases have carried SSD-required notes, and a Final Fantasy game built for PS5 and Switch 2 as baseline hardware will almost certainly expect an SSD too. That is not confirmed for this title; it is a pattern, and the official line will settle it.
One thing you can do now: check your drive. Steam installs to whichever library folder you pick, and you can add a second library on a different drive from Settings, then Storage. If your main SSD is tight, set up the second library before the preload or launch download starts, because moving a half-downloaded game between drives is slower than starting it in the right place.
The Steam Storage figure is also the number people quote in “how many GB is it” threads, and it is consistently higher than the real on-disk size after install. Treat it as the free space you need during installation, not the footprint you live with afterwards.
PS5: install size, free space and the day-one patch question
Nothing is listed on the PS5 store page beyond the pre-order itself. When the file size appears, remember that the PS5 figure Sony displays is the download package. The installed size can differ, and a day-one patch frequently adds several gigabytes on top. The typical sequence for a major third-party launch on PS5 goes: preload opens with the base package, the day-one patch unlocks separately at or shortly before release, and the store listing updates to the combined size a day or two after launch.
If you buy physical on PS5, the disc installs the base game to the internal SSD and the patch downloads over the top. Disc owners still need the full install space; the disc only saves you the download bandwidth. That is standard PS5 behaviour and nothing about this release changes it.
The PS5 ships with 825 GB raw and roughly 667 GB usable, and the Pro with 2 TB raw and roughly 1.89 TB usable. Both accept M.2 NVMe expansion. If your console is already near full from games like Battlefield 6, this is the moment to move something to an expansion drive. For scale on what modern multiplatform releases demand, our breakdown of how many gb is battlefield 6 on each platform is a useful benchmark, though a single-player Final Fantasy will not necessarily match a shooter’s footprint.
How to plan your free space before a number exists
You cannot plan to a figure that has not been published. You can plan to a buffer. Here is the method that avoids launch-day deletion scrambles on every platform.
Reserve space without the official number
- Check free space on each platform you intend to buy on.
- Note which platform you will actually play on first, and prioritise that drive.
- On Switch 2, assume the full download hits internal storage or microSD Express.
- On PS5, assume download plus a separate day-one patch.
- On Steam, assume the Storage line will overstate the final footprint by a margin.
- Revisit this page the week of October 19, 2026, when figures normally appear.
Why the margin matters: a console will refuse to start a download if the package will not fit, but it will also refuse if there is not enough working space to unpack a patch, which can require temporarily holding both the old and new files. On Steam this is explicit; on PS5 and Switch 2 it is hidden but still real. Keep more free space than the listed figure, not exactly the listed figure.
What we won’t claim yet
Several details are being repeated online as if confirmed. They are not, and this page will not state them until they are.
- A specific install size on any platform. None exists officially.
- A preload date on PS5. October 20 is community-reported, not posted by Sony or Square Enix.
- SSD requirement on PC. Likely by pattern, unconfirmed by the listing.
- An Xbox Series X/S version. No store listing has been found, and Square Enix has not announced one. This is not the same as a denial.
- Day-one patch size. Unknown until launch week.
- Whether the Switch 2 version runs at higher resolution or frame rate than the Switch version, which affects asset size. Expected, but the technical breakdown has not been published.
Pre-order bonus content is another area to be careful with. Store listings show pre-order and early-purchase bonuses in the form of in-game items, but those are small license entitlements, not separate downloads of any meaningful size. Bonus content does not change the storage requirement in any way you would notice.
Why the four versions will not be the same size
When figures do land, expect them to differ by platform, sometimes by a lot. Three things drive that.
Texture and audio asset tiers. PS5 and PC builds ship the highest-resolution textures and typically uncompressed or lightly compressed audio. The Switch version ships assets tuned for a much smaller memory budget. The Switch 2 version will sit between them or close to PS5 depending on how much Square Enix scaled the assets for the new hardware.
Language packs. Square Enix often bundles Japanese and English voice tracks together with full text localisation, and on some platforms the voice packs are separate optional downloads. If the Steam listing exposes a DLC-style language pack, that is a chunk you can skip to save space. Check the DLC section on the Steam page once the full listing is up.
Compression and packaging. Nintendo’s eShop packages are generally more aggressively compressed than Steam’s, and Sony’s Kraken compression on PS5 is efficient enough that a PS5 package can come in under the PC equivalent even with identical assets. So a PC figure higher than the PS5 figure is normal and does not mean the PC version has more content.
The practical upshot: do not read one platform’s number off a store and apply it to another. Wait for each store to publish its own line.
The download-day mistakes to avoid
Most launch-day storage problems come from a small set of avoidable errors, and they are worth listing because this release has a mandatory Switch 2 download and a probable PS5 patch stacked on top of the base package.
Starting the download on the wrong drive. On PC, pick the Steam library folder before you click install. On PS5, make sure you are installing to internal storage, not the extended USB drive, because PS5 games must run from the internal or M.2 SSD. If the download lands on a USB drive it will need to copy over before it plays.
Queuing it behind a system update. Both consoles will pause a game download while a firmware update installs. Update the system a day early so the game download has a clear run.
Assuming the physical copy avoids the install. On PS5, the disc installs fully. On Switch 2, the Game-Key Card installs fully. Only the original Switch cartridge contains the game.
Deleting the wrong thing to make room. If you free space by uninstalling another game, check that its save data stays in the cloud or on the console first. PS5 keeps saves separate from the game install, so uninstalling a game does not erase its save. Switch 2 also keeps saves on the system. Steam cloud depends on whether that particular game supports it.
Ignoring the pre-order auto-download. On Switch and Switch 2, a pre-purchase will try to download automatically once the package is live, which can be several days before launch. If your card is nearly full, the console will throw a space error at the worst possible time. Clear room before the week of launch, not on launch night.
Good to know
On PS5 you can set Automatic Downloads under Settings, Saved Data and Game/App Settings, so the game starts pulling the moment preload opens, even if the console is in rest mode. Turn it on before preload rather than after.
How this page will update
Launch-set reference pages get edited as data arrives, and the sequence for this one is predictable. The first update will come when Steam posts the Storage line and full specs. The second will come when the PS5 store adds its file size, most likely alongside the preload flag. The third will cover the eShop required-space figures for both Switch generations. After launch, a final pass will add the installed size on each platform after the day-one patch, because the number you see at preload is rarely the number you live with a week later.
Every figure added will carry the date it was observed. Storage requirements drift over the life of a game as patches and DLC land, which is why long-running titles end up with sizes that bear little resemblance to their launch listing. Our page on fortnite pc storage requirements is a good example of how far a figure can move from its original listing after years of updates. A single-player Final Fantasy will not drift that aggressively, but it will drift.
FAQ
How long is FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE?
No official playtime has been announced, and there are no completion averages yet because the game is unreleased. Playtime trackers like HowLongToBeat only begin reporting an average once players submit times after launch, so expect the first meaningful figures in the days after October 22, 2026. Square Enix sometimes states a rough hour count in pre-release interviews; nothing of that kind has been published for this title at the last check.
How many GB is FFXIV right now?
This is a different game, but it comes up constantly alongside RESONANCE searches. FINAL FANTASY XIV is a long-running MMO with multiple expansions, and its install size has grown with each one. For the Dawntrail era, Square Enix’s official Windows requirements list 140 GB of free space. The PS5 and Mac figures differ, and the number changes with each expansion and major patch, so check Square Enix’s live system requirements page before clearing space rather than relying on a figure from an older forum post.
Is FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE a remake of FF1?
No official announcement describes it as a remake of the original 1987 game. The store listings present it as its own entry. If you have seen it described as an FF1 remake, that framing comes from fan speculation and not from Square Enix. This page will be corrected if the publisher ever characterises it differently.
Is FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE hard?
Nothing can be said about difficulty before release. Square Enix has not detailed difficulty options or modes for this title. Recent mainline Final Fantasy releases have shipped with selectable difficulty settings, and that is the pattern to expect, but it is unconfirmed for RESONANCE. Check back after launch for the actual difficulty menu rather than trusting pre-release impressions.
Will the file size be the same on Switch and Switch 2?
Almost certainly not. The Switch 2 version will carry higher-resolution assets than the original Switch version, so expect a larger download. The exact figures are not listed on the eShop yet. The bigger practical difference is format: the Switch cartridge reportedly holds the full game, while the Switch 2 physical edition is reportedly a Game-Key Card that downloads everything.
Do I need an SSD to play on PC?
The Steam listing does not yet show the Storage line or a drive-type note. Square Enix has required SSDs for its recent large PC releases, so it is likely but not confirmed. When the full requirements appear on Steam, the Storage line will say so directly.
