The Last of Us is a single-player survival game from Naughty Dog, published by Sony. The current version, The Last of Us Part I, runs on PS5 and PC, takes about 15 hours to finish, needs around 80 GB of storage, and carries an ESRB M rating. This is our master fact sheet for the game, with every figure dated.
Which version this page covers
Three releases share the name. The original launched on PS3 in 2013, The Last of Us Remastered arrived on PS4 in 2014, and The Last of Us Part I remade the game from scratch for PS5 in 2022, then PC in 2023. We treat Part I as the reference version because it is the one sold on current hardware. Where the older releases differ, we say so.
The sequel, The Last of Us Part II, is a separate game with its own PC port (Part II Remastered). We include its PC requirements further down because most readers comparing specs want both side by side.
How long to beat
Part I follows the original campaign scene for scene, so playtime is nearly identical across all three releases. The numbers below are community averages of the kind HowLongToBeat reports, rounded to the nearest hour. If you want the full breakdown by play style, our “last of us long is the game” page has it.
| Play style | Average time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Main story | about 15 hours | Normal difficulty, little exploration |
| Main story + extras | about 20 hours | Collectibles, optional conversations, safes |
| Completionist | about 27 hours | All trophies, including Grounded and Permadeath runs push this higher |
| Left Behind (prequel chapter) | 2 to 3 hours | Included with Part I and Remastered |
Figures apply to Part I as of March 2026. The PS4 Remastered and PS3 original land within an hour of these averages. Playing on Grounded difficulty, where enemies hit harder and the HUD is stripped back, typically adds several hours to a main story run.
File size and storage

Storage requirements vary more than length does, because Part I rebuilt every asset at higher resolution.
| Platform | Install size | Date of figure |
|---|---|---|
| PS5 (Part I) | about 79 GB | PlayStation Store listing, 2022 to 2026 |
| PC (Part I) | 100 GB SSD free space required by Sony; installed footprint is smaller | March 2023 requirements |
| PS4 (Remastered) | about 50 GB | PlayStation Store listing |
| PS3 (original) | not confirmed | Disc-based, partial mandatory install |
Sony’s PC requirements insist on an SSD, not a hard drive, for every spec tier. Loading relies on fast streaming, and the shader compilation step on first launch is also noticeably slower on mechanical drives.
Update sizes: the PC version received a run of large patches in its first six months after launch (patch 1.0.1 through the 1.1 series), several of them well over 10 GB because they replaced shader and texture data. Exact per-patch figures are not confirmed here. PS5 patches have been smaller and the store size has stayed close to 79 GB.
Good to know
On PC the game compiles shaders on first launch before you can play. Budget 10 to 20 minutes on a mid-range CPU and leave the game open; closing it restarts the job. Updating GPU drivers triggers a partial recompile.
For a sense of scale, 79 GB is heavy for a single-player game but still short of the biggest shooters. Our “many gb is battlefield 6” page shows how far the current multiplayer titles have pushed past 100 GB.
PC system requirements
Sony and Naughty Dog published four spec tiers for the PC release, each tied to a resolution and frame rate target. We reproduce them from the March 2023 pre-launch requirements, which were revised once before release to fix a GPU typo (the recommended tier originally listed a non-existent “RX 5800 XT”; the corrected card is the RX 5700 XT).
| Tier | Target | CPU | GPU | RAM | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 720p, 30 fps, Low | AMD Ryzen 5 1500X / Intel Core i7-4770K | AMD Radeon RX 470 (4 GB), RX 6500 XT (4 GB) / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (4 GB), GTX 1050 Ti (4 GB) | 16 GB | 100 GB SSD |
| Recommended | 1080p, 60 fps, High | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X / Intel Core i7-8700 | AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT (8 GB), RX 6600 XT (8 GB) / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super (8 GB), RTX 3060 (8 GB) | 16 GB | 100 GB SSD |
| Performance | 1440p, 60 fps, High | AMD Ryzen 5 5600X / Intel Core i7-9700K | AMD Radeon RX 6750 XT / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3070 Ti | 16 GB | 100 GB SSD |
| Ultra | 4K, 60 fps, Ultra | AMD Ryzen 9 5900X / Intel Core i5-12600K | AMD Radeon RX 7900 XT / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080 | 32 GB | 100 GB SSD |
Operating system across all tiers: Windows 10, version 1909 or newer. DirectX 12 is required. The game supports AMD FSR 2 and NVIDIA DLSS upscaling, so a card at the recommended tier can push above 1080p with upscaling enabled at a minor cost to clarity.
Two practical notes from the launch period. First, the 4 GB cards in the minimum tier struggle with texture memory, which is why the Low preset exists; the Medium texture setting wants 6 GB or more of VRAM. Second, the recommended tier’s 16 GB of system RAM is a real floor, not a suggestion, because the game stages textures in main memory while shaders compile.
If you are weighing another demanding single-player title against this one, our “kcd 2 system requirements” page uses the same tiered layout for a direct comparison.
Steam Deck
Part I carries Valve’s Steam Deck Verified badge, awarded at the March 2023 launch. Naughty Dog shipped a Steam Deck preset in the first weeks after release, and the realistic target on Deck is the Low preset at 30 fps. Expect the full shader compile on first boot here too, and plan for the 100 GB requirement on the Deck’s internal drive or a microSD card.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered on PC
The sequel’s PC port arrived on 3 April 2025 with requirements that mirror Part I at the lower tiers but ask for more storage.
| Tier | Target | CPU | GPU | RAM | Storage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Minimum | 720p, 30 fps, Low | AMD Ryzen 5 1500X / Intel Core i7-4770K | AMD Radeon RX 470, RX 6500 XT / NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970, GTX 1050 Ti | 16 GB | 150 GB SSD |
| Recommended | 1080p, 60 fps, High | AMD Ryzen 5 3600X / Intel Core i7-8700 | AMD Radeon RX 5700 XT, RX 6600 XT / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2070 Super, RTX 3060 | 16 GB | 150 GB SSD |

Crossplay and cross-progression

No. Part I has no online component, so there is nothing to cross-play. There is also no cross-progression or cloud save sharing between the PS5 and PC versions; each stores saves separately, and a PlayStation Network account is not required to play on PC.
| Feature | Status |
|---|---|
| Crossplay | Not applicable (no multiplayer in Part I) |
| Cross-progression PS5 to PC | No |
| PSN account required on PC | No |
| Cross-buy PS4 to PS5 | No (Remastered and Part I are separate purchases) |
The older releases did have online play. The PS3 original’s Factions multiplayer servers were shut down on 3 September 2019 alongside Uncharted 2 and 3. The PS4 Remastered Factions servers remained online well after that; their current status in 2026 is not confirmed. Even when live, Factions was PS3-to-PS3 or PS4-to-PS4 only, never cross-platform. Our “cross-platform gaming” explainer covers why single-generation lobbies like that were the norm at the time.
Multiplayer, co-op and offline
Part I is a one-player game. There is no co-op, local or online, and no competitive mode. The Factions mode that shipped with the 2013 original and the 2014 Remastered was dropped from the remake; Naughty Dog spun its standalone multiplayer project out of Part II development and then cancelled it in December 2023.
Offline play: fully supported on PS5 and PC. The PC version needs an internet connection for the initial download and patches but runs offline afterward, including on Steam Deck in offline mode.
Age rating

Every release of The Last of Us has carried the highest standard rating in each major territory. The content is the same across versions.
| Board | Rating | Descriptors |
|---|---|---|
| ESRB (North America) | M (Mature 17+) | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Content, Strong Language |
| PEGI (Europe) | 18 | Violence, Bad Language |
| CERO (Japan) | Z (18+) | Restricted sale, ID required |
ESRB and PEGI listings for Part I, checked March 2026. The Japanese PS3 release was edited to reduce dismemberment and gore, a standard CERO Z adjustment at the time; the Part I listing in Japan is also CERO Z. Good to know
The PS4 Remastered disc runs on PS5 through backward compatibility, with the Boost Mode frame-rate patch Naughty Dog added in 2021 giving a stable 60 fps. It is the cheapest route to the campaign on current hardware if you can live without the remake’s visuals.
FAQ
How many GB is The Last of Us Part I?
About 79 GB on PS5 per the PlayStation Store listing. On PC, Sony requires 100 GB of free SSD space for installation, though the installed footprint ends up below that figure. The PS4 Remastered is about 50 GB.
Can my PC run The Last of Us Part I?
If you have a GTX 1050 Ti or RX 470 with 4 GB of VRAM, 16 GB of RAM and an SSD, you clear the minimum for 720p at 30 fps. An RTX 3060 or RX 6600 XT paired with a Ryzen 5 3600X or Core i7-8700 meets the recommended tier for 1080p at 60 fps.
Is The Last of Us Part I cross-platform?
No. It is single-player only, so there is no crossplay, and saves do not transfer between the PS5 and PC versions.
How long is The Last of Us?
Around 15 hours for the main story, 20 hours with side content, and roughly 27 hours to complete everything. Those averages hold for the PS3, PS4 and PS5/PC releases alike.
What is The Last of Us rated?
ESRB M (Mature 17+) for Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Sexual Content and Strong Language. PEGI rates it 18 for Violence and Bad Language. Japan’s CERO rates it Z.
Is The Last of Us on Game Pass?
No. It is a Sony-published title and has never appeared on Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass. The PS4 Remastered was in the PS Plus Extra catalog at that tier’s 2022 launch; its current inclusion is not confirmed.
