Last checked:
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is expected to support crossplay between PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2 at its October 23, 2026 launch, because every Call of Duty since 2019 has shipped with it and preview coverage has noted crossplay and cross-progression across every platform, but Activision has not yet published a platform-by-platform crossplay or cross-progression FAQ for this specific game. This page lists what is confirmed, what is standard for the series, and what remains unannounced. It will be refreshed as launch details land.
What Activision has confirmed so far
The confirmed facts are narrow. Activision has announced Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 with a release date of October 23, 2026, and the official site is live with pre-order editions and an age gate. A PC (Windows) release is listed. The official site also carries the in-game Activision account registration flow, which is the same account system that powers crossplay in current Call of Duty titles.
What has not been published at last check is a dedicated MW4 crossplay statement. There is no line from Activision or Infinity Ward saying “MW4 supports crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox and PC” in the way the Black Ops 7 FAQ did ahead of its November 14, 2025 launch. That statement usually arrives in the launch-week blog post or the support FAQ, so expect it closer to October.
If you want the short version for planning a squad: assume it works the same way as Black Ops 7, and check back here once the official FAQ drops.
Crossplay status by platform
The table below separates what is listed from what is standard for the series. “Expected” means every Call of Duty from Modern Warfare (2019) through Black Ops 7 has done it, and nothing announced suggests a change. “Not announced” means Activision has not listed the platform at all.
| Platform | Listed for MW4 | Crossplay with other platforms | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC (Windows) | Yes | PlayStation, Xbox | Expected, not confirmed |
| PlayStation 5 | Check store listing | PC, Xbox | Expected, not confirmed |
| PlayStation 4 | Not confirmed | PC, Xbox | Not confirmed |
| Xbox Series X and S | Check store listing | PC, PlayStation | Expected, not confirmed |
| Xbox One | Not confirmed | PC, PlayStation | Not confirmed |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | Yes | PC, PlayStation, Xbox | Expected, not confirmed |
Two notes on that table. First, Black Ops 7 shipped on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One alongside the current consoles, with last-gen players in the same crossplay pool. Activision has not said if MW4 will keep last-gen support, so treat PS4 and Xbox One as open questions rather than a cut. Second, the Nintendo row reflects Microsoft’s 10-year agreement from 2023 to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms. Activision’s official announcement lists Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch platform for MW4, making it the first Call of Duty confirmed under that deal.
What crossplay means in Call of Duty specifically

If you are new to cross-platform gaming, the Call of Duty version has a few quirks worth knowing before launch day.
Crossplay in this series is on by default. When you boot the game and sign into an Activision account, matchmaking pools PC, PlayStation and Xbox players together. You do not need to flip anything on. The only decisions you make are about turning parts of it off.
Lobbies and parties are built around your Activision ID, which looks like a name followed by a hash and numbers. You add friends by that ID from the Social menu, and it does not matter which platform they are on. Your PlayStation friends list and Xbox friends list are also pulled in, so you can invite people from either without re-adding them.
Voice chat and text chat work across platforms once you are in a party. Platform-level privacy settings still apply, so a console with communication restrictions will block cross-network chat regardless of the in-game setting.
Good to know
If you plan to squad up at launch, link your PlayStation, Xbox, Steam and Battle.net accounts to a single Activision account before October 23. Linking takes a few minutes on the Activision profile page and avoids the launch-night queue of players sorting it out while friends wait in a lobby.
Crossplay versus cross-progression: the simple explanation
These two terms get mixed up in every pre-launch thread, so here is the split.
Crossplay is about who you can play with. It lets a PC player and an Xbox player land in the same match. It does not move anything between accounts.
Cross-progression is about what follows you. In Call of Duty, your rank, weapon levels, camos, operators, battle pass progress and most purchases live on your Activision account, not on your console. Play on PS5 on Monday and on PC on Tuesday, and you see the same unlocks on both, provided both platforms are linked to that one Activision account.
The series has supported both since 2019, and Black Ops 7 continued it. For MW4, both are expected but not yet stated in writing by Activision.
| Feature | What it covers | Series standard | MW4 status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Crossplay | Matchmaking and parties across PC, PlayStation, Xbox | Yes, on by default | Expected, not confirmed |
| Cross-progression | Rank, weapon XP, camos, battle pass, operators | Yes, via Activision account | Expected, not confirmed |
| Cross-purchase of the base game | Buying once for all platforms | No, each platform purchase is separate | Not confirmed |
| Cross-gen crossplay | PS4 and Xbox One in the same pool | Yes, in Black Ops 7 | Not confirmed |
| COD Points | Shared across linked platforms | Yes, with platform exceptions | Not confirmed |
One point on that last row. Historically, COD Points bought on one platform appear on your other linked platforms, but Activision’s support pages have carried exceptions for points bought through certain storefronts. Do not assume a bundle bought on PlayStation will be spendable on PC until Activision publishes the MW4 rules.
How to set up cross-progression before launch

You can do all of this now on your existing Activision account. If you played Black Ops 7, Modern Warfare III or Warzone, the account already exists.
How to link your platforms
- Sign in at the Activision profile page with the account you use in Call of Duty.
- Open Account Linking and connect PlayStation Network, Xbox network, Steam and Battle.net as needed.
- Confirm each link through the platform’s own sign-in prompt.
- On launch day, sign into MW4 on each platform and accept the Activision account prompt.
Two cautions. Activision only allows one account of each platform type per Activision account, so you cannot link two PlayStation accounts to the same profile. Unlinking a platform also starts a cooldown period before it can be linked elsewhere, so sort this out well before October 23 rather than on the night.
If you have never made an Activision account, the in-game registration flow on the official MW4 site walks you through it, including the date of birth check. Call of Duty is rated for adults in most regions, and the age gate on the site exists for that reason. The game’s final ESRB and PEGI ratings for MW4 were not listed at last check.
Can you turn crossplay off?
Yes, and this is where platform differences matter. Activision has let console players disable crossplay since 2019. The setting sits inside the game, under the Account and Network menu, where you choose between playing with everyone or restricting your pool.
Black Ops 7 shipped with a third option: console-only crossplay. That keeps PlayStation and Xbox players together while excluding PC. It grew out of a console-only ranked option introduced during Black Ops 6, and it responded to long-running complaints from controller players about PC cheaters and mouse-and-keyboard advantages. Activision has not said if MW4 carries the console-only option, but dropping a setting that was expanded only a year earlier would be unusual.
PC players cannot turn crossplay off. That has been the rule in every entry, because the PC population alone is not large enough to fill lobbies in every mode and region at all hours.
| Platform | In-game crossplay toggle | Console-only option | System-level setting also required |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation 5 and PS4 | Yes | Yes in Black Ops 7, not confirmed for MW4 | No |
| Xbox Series X, S and Xbox One | Yes | Yes in Black Ops 7, not confirmed for MW4 | Yes, “Allow cross-network play” in Xbox privacy settings |
| PC (Battle.net, Steam, Xbox app) | No | No | No |
Expect longer matchmaking times with crossplay off, especially in less popular playlists. Activision’s own support pages have warned about this for years, and the console-only pool in Black Ops 7 is noticeably thinner than the full pool in niche modes.
PC storefronts and the Call of Duty HQ launcher

Every Call of Duty since Modern Warfare II in 2022 has launched inside the Call of Duty HQ hub, which bundles the current premium title, Warzone and the previous year’s games under one install. Black Ops 7 followed that model. MW4 running through HQ is expected but not confirmed.
What that means for crossplay on PC: your storefront does not affect who you play with. Steam, Battle.net and Xbox app players all share one Activision account layer and match together. Cross-progression across those three PC storefronts also works, since they link to the same profile. The one thing that does not carry is the purchase itself. Buying MW4 on Steam does not unlock it on Battle.net.
The official announcement lists Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, PC (Battle.net, Xbox on PC, Steam) and Nintendo Switch 2, and PC is where storage and hardware questions pile up. Those are covered in our mw4 system requirements page, which will be updated once Activision publishes the minimum and recommended specs.
Game Pass and subscriptions
Black Ops 6 and Black Ops 7 both launched day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Whether MW4 does the same has not been confirmed by Microsoft or Activision at last check.
For crossplay purposes, a subscription copy behaves exactly like a purchased copy. Game Pass players on Xbox and PC matchmake with PlayStation players, and progression ties to the same Activision account. If the Game Pass announcement comes, nothing about the crossplay answer changes. Pricing for editions and the subscription tiers is tracked separately on our call of duty price page.
How this compares with the rest of the series
The expected answer for MW4 is grounded in seven years of consistent behaviour.
| Game | Release | Crossplay at launch | Cross-progression | Console-only option |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Modern Warfare (2019) | October 25, 2019 | Yes | Yes | No |
| Black Ops Cold War | November 13, 2020 | Yes | Yes | No |
| Vanguard | November 5, 2021 | Yes | Yes | No |
| Modern Warfare II | October 28, 2022 | Yes | Yes | No |
| Modern Warfare III | November 10, 2023 | Yes | Yes | No |
| Black Ops 6 | October 25, 2024 | Yes | Yes | Added post-launch for ranked |
| Black Ops 7 | November 14, 2025 | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Modern Warfare 4 | October 23, 2026 | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Not confirmed |
The pattern makes a reversal very unlikely. Call of Duty’s Warzone integration depends on one shared pool across platforms, and the Activision account system is built into the registration flow already live on the MW4 site. The gap is purely one of documentation, and that gap usually closes in the final weeks before release.
What this means before launch
For a mixed group of PC, PlayStation and Xbox players, the practical steps are the same as last year. Make sure everyone has an Activision account, link every platform you might play on, and exchange Activision IDs rather than platform gamertags. If any console player in your group plans to use a console-only setting, agree on it beforehand, because a party cannot match if members have conflicting crossplay settings.
For launch timing, the game goes live at different hours depending on region, and preloads on consoles usually open several days ahead. Our mw4 release time page tracks the per-time-zone schedule as Activision confirms it.
Everything on this page marked “expected” will be changed to “confirmed” or corrected once Activision publishes the MW4 FAQ or launch blog. If you check back after October 23, 2026 and a row still says “not confirmed”, it means Activision has not stated it in writing, not that it is absent from the game.
FAQ
Is Modern Warfare 4 cross platform between PS5 and PC?
Expected yes, based on every Call of Duty since 2019 and the Activision account registration already live on the MW4 site. Activision has not published a specific MW4 crossplay statement at last check.
Is Modern Warfare 4 cross platform between Xbox and PlayStation?
Expected yes. Console-to-console crossplay has been standard since Modern Warfare (2019), and Black Ops 6 added a console-only option during its seasonal updates that keeps the two consoles together while excluding PC, which Black Ops 7 carried forward. MW4 has not confirmed that option.
Does Modern Warfare 4 have cross-progression?
Expected yes through a linked Activision account, covering rank, weapon levels, camos and battle pass progress. Activision has not confirmed the MW4 rules for COD Points or bundle sharing between platforms.
Can I turn off crossplay in Modern Warfare 4?
Console players have been able to disable crossplay in every entry, and Black Ops 7 shipped with a console-only setting. PC players cannot disable it. MW4 settings have not been detailed yet.
Will Modern Warfare 4 be on Nintendo Switch 2?
Yes. Microsoft’s 10-year agreement to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo platforms dates from 2023, and Activision’s official announcement lists Nintendo Switch 2 as a launch platform for MW4 on October 23, 2026.
Do I need to buy Modern Warfare 4 twice to play on PC and console?
Yes, based on how every previous entry has worked. The purchase is tied to the platform store, while progression is tied to your Activision account. Activision has not announced a cross-purchase option for MW4.
