Ghost of Yōtei is a PS5-only open-world action game from Sucker Punch Productions, released on 2 October 2025 with an ESRB Mature (M) rating; it is primarily single-player, with an online co-op mode, Ghost of Yōtei: Legends. Community-reported averages put the main story at around 25 hours, the install is roughly 85 GB, and there is no crossplay because the game exists on one platform. Every figure below is dated, and anything I could not verify is marked not confirmed.
What Ghost of Yōtei is
Sony publishes it, Sucker Punch develops it, and it is the follow-up to Ghost of Tsushima rather than a direct sequel. The setting moves north to Ezo (modern Hokkaido) in 1603, more than three hundred years after Jin Sakai’s story on Tsushima.
You play Atsu, a mercenary whose family was killed sixteen years earlier by a gang known as the Yōtei Six. Her journey takes her around Mount Yōtei hunting each of them, and the structure is deliberately non-linear: you can go after the six targets in almost any order.
Combat keeps the stance-free, timing-heavy feel of Tsushima but adds a proper weapon wheel. Atsu carries a katana, an odachi, dual katana, a kusarigama and a yari, and each weapon has a matchup it is strong against. Ranged options include a bow and a tanegashima matchlock rifle. Horseback travel returns, with the mount doubling as a mobile camp for fast travel and crafting.
Three cinematic modes ship with the game: Kurosawa mode (black and white with film grain and Japanese audio), Miike mode (a tighter camera with more mud and blood), and Watanabe mode (a lo-fi soundtrack curated by Shinichirō Watanabe). None of them change difficulty.
How long to beat
Ghost of Yōtei runs about 25 hours for the main story and roughly 55 to 60 hours for a full completion, based on community-reported averages collected since launch. These are HowLongToBeat-style figures, so they describe the middle of the pack, not a speedrun or a slow explorer.
| Playstyle | Average time (PS5) | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Main story | About 25 hours | The Yōtei Six hunt and the ending |
| Main + extras | About 40 hours | Story plus most side quests, shrines and legends |
| Completionist | 55 to 60 hours | Platinum trophy, all collectibles, every map region |
Data as of March 2026. The spread is wide because the hunt is open-ended; players who clear every bounty board and hot spring before the final target will push well past 40 hours even without aiming for the Platinum.
Two things change the number. New Game+ arrived in a free post-launch update in autumn 2025, and a second run is noticeably shorter because the map is already revealed and your gear carries over. Difficulty also matters: Lethal mode kills faster in both directions, which tends to cut fight time but adds retries.
Trophy hunters should budget for the full 55 to 60 hours. The Platinum does not require Lethal difficulty, and the trophy list is single-player only, so the upcoming co-op mode will not block it.
File size and storage

The PS5 install is about 85 GB at launch, and the PlayStation Store listing is the only official source because there is no PC or Xbox version.
| Platform | Install size | Notes | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 (disc) | About 85 GB | Full install to SSD required; disc must stay inserted | October 2025 |
| PS5 (digital) | About 85 GB | Pre-load opened 48 hours before launch | October 2025 |
| PS5 Pro | About 85 GB | Same package, enhanced modes unlock automatically | October 2025 |
| Update patches | Varies | Post-launch patches have added several GB in total; exact running total not confirmed | March 2026 |
The day-one patch and the New Game+ update were both moderate downloads rather than full re-installs, but Sony does not publish a running patch total, so I treat the post-update size as not confirmed. If you are managing a base PS5 with its 667 GB of usable space, plan for 90 GB to be safe.
For scale, this is lighter than most 2025 shooters. If you want a point of comparison across platforms, our breakdown of how many gb is battlefield 6 shows installs north of 100 GB on console.
Good to know
The game installs to the internal SSD or an M.2 expansion drive only. You can park it on an external USB drive to avoid re-downloading, but it will not run from there and copies back at around 85 GB each time.
PC system requirements
There is no PC version of Ghost of Yōtei, and Sony has not announced one as of March 2026. Searches for Ghost of Yōtei specs almost always land here, so the honest answer is that the only hardware specification that applies is the PS5 itself.
For context, Ghost of Tsushima launched on PS4 in July 2020 and reached PC in May 2024, a gap of nearly four years. Sony’s recent pattern for single-player first-party titles has been shorter than that, often one to two years, but no date, store page or minimum spec for a Yōtei PC port exists.
| Question | Status | As of |
|---|---|---|
| PC version announced | No | March 2026 |
| Minimum PC requirements | Not confirmed | March 2026 |
| Recommended PC requirements | Not confirmed | March 2026 |
| Steam Deck Verified status | Not applicable | March 2026 |
| PlayStation PC overlay / PSN sign-in | Not applicable | March 2026 |
When a port does appear, expect requirements in the same bracket as other recent open-world ports; anyone benchmarking their rig today can look at the kcd 2 system requirements as a reasonable proxy for a 2025-era open-world game.
PS5 and PS5 Pro performance modes
The game runs on both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro, and it carries the PS5 Pro Enhanced label.
| Console | Mode | Target frame rate | Resolution approach | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | Quality | 30 fps | Higher resolution, full effects | October 2025 |
| PS5 | Performance | 60 fps | Dynamic resolution | October 2025 |
| PS5 Pro | Enhanced | 60 fps | Higher resolution with PSSR upscaling | October 2025 |
| PS5 / Pro | 120 Hz output | Unlocked above 60 on VRR displays | Requires a 120 Hz VRR screen | October 2025 |
VRR support is in the display settings menu and is worth switching on if your TV supports it, since the Performance mode holds 60 fps far more consistently with it. Sucker Punch has not published exact internal resolution figures, so the resolution column is descriptive rather than numeric.
DualSense features are the other hardware-specific element. The adaptive triggers add tension when drawing the bow, haptics distinguish the surfaces Atsu’s mount crosses, and the controller speaker handles the shamisen mini-game.
Crossplay and cross-progression
No. Ghost of Yōtei has no crossplay and no cross-progression, because the game is available only on PS5 as of March 2026.
| Feature | Status | Detail |
|---|---|---|
| Crossplay | Not applicable | Single platform |
| Cross-progression | Not applicable | Single platform |
| Cross-generation (PS4) | No | PS5 only, no PS4 version |
| PS5 to PS5 Pro saves | Yes | Same platform, saves sync via PS Plus cloud or USB |
| Account linking | Not required | PSN account is the only account |
If a PC version arrives, crossplay for the co-op mode would be a reasonable expectation given Sony’s handling of other first-party ports, but nothing has been stated. Our explainer on cross-platform gaming covers how that normally works once a second platform enters the picture.
Multiplayer, co-op and offline
At launch Ghost of Yōtei is strictly single-player. A free online co-op mode, Ghost of Yōtei Legends, is scheduled for 2026 but had not released as of March 2026.
| Mode | Players | Online required | Status | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Campaign | 1 | No | Available | October 2025 |
| New Game+ | 1 | No | Available via free update | Autumn 2025 |
| Legends story missions | 2 (online co-op) | Yes, plus PS Plus | Announced for 2026 | March 2026 |
| Legends survival | Up to 4 (online co-op) | Yes, plus PS Plus | Announced for 2026 | March 2026 |
| Local co-op / split-screen | None | Not applicable | Not planned | March 2026 |
Legends follows the same template as the Tsushima mode: two-player story missions and four-player survival maps, with its own classes and progression separate from the campaign. Sucker Punch has confirmed it will be a free update rather than paid DLC. A specific release date, and whether it ships as a standalone download like Tsushima’s version did, are both not confirmed.
Offline play works fully for the campaign. The disc version needs no internet after the initial install, and the digital version only needs a connection to license the purchase. Trophies sync when you reconnect.
Age rating
Ghost of Yōtei is rated Mature 17+ by the ESRB and 18 by PEGI. Both boards flag the violence first; this is a revenge story with decapitations, dismemberment and a lot of blood.
| Board | Rating | Descriptors | Region |
|---|---|---|---|
| ESRB | M (Mature 17+) | Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Language, Nudity | North America |
| PEGI | 18 | Violence, Bad Language | Europe |
| USK | 18 | Not confirmed | Germany |
| CERO | Z (18+) | Not confirmed | Japan |
| ACB | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Australia |
Ratings as of October 2025. The ESRB summary describes sword combat with slow-motion kills, enemies set on fire, and a hot spring sequence that accounts for the nudity descriptor. Language is sparse by modern standards but includes strong words in English.
Nothing in the ratings relates to purchases. There are no microtransactions, loot boxes or paid cosmetics in the game, so the ESRB’s “In-Game Purchases” interactive element does not appear on the listing.
If you are checking ratings across a family library, our page on the batman arkham knight rating shows a similar M rating applied to a far less bloody game, which is a useful reminder that descriptors matter more than the letter.
Release dates and platforms
Ghost of Yōtei launched worldwide on 2 October 2025 on PS5, with no staggered regional dates.
| Platform | Region | Release date | Format | As of |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| PS5 | North America | 2 October 2025 | Disc and digital | October 2025 |
| PS5 | Europe and UK | 2 October 2025 | Disc and digital | October 2025 |
| PS5 | Japan | 2 October 2025 | Disc and digital | October 2025 |
| PS5 | Australia and New Zealand | 2 October 2025 | Disc and digital | October 2025 |
| PS5 Pro | All regions | 2 October 2025 | Same SKU, enhanced | October 2025 |
| PS4 | Not applicable | No version | Not applicable | March 2026 |
| PC | All regions | Not confirmed | Not announced | March 2026 |
| Xbox Series X and S | Not applicable | No version | Not applicable | March 2026 |
Sony unlocked the digital edition at midnight local time in each territory, which is its usual approach for first-party releases, so there was no single global unlock moment. Pre-loads opened on 30 September 2025. If you are checking back for the Legends update or a future port, our ghost of yotei release time page tracks unlock hours by region.
The game was first announced at the September 2024 State of Play, with the October 2025 date confirmed in April 2025. There was no delay between the date announcement and release.
Price, editions and subscriptions
The standard edition costs $69.99 in the US, and the game is not included in PS Plus or Game Pass as of March 2026.
| Edition | US | UK | Europe | Japan | Contents |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Standard | $69.99 | £69.99 | €79.99 | ¥8,980 | Base game |
| Digital Deluxe | $79.99 | £79.99 | €89.99 | ¥9,980 | Base game, Snake armor set and dye, mask, horse gear and charm, early Traveler’s Maps unlock |
| Collector’s Edition | $249.99 | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Not confirmed | Digital Deluxe content plus physical replica mask, tsuba, sash, coin pouch and display items |
Prices as of March 2026, before regional sales. Sony has run two short-term discounts on the digital editions since launch, both in the 20 to 30 percent range, but the list price has not dropped. The Collector’s Edition sold through PlayStation Direct and selected retailers, and whether it included a disc or a voucher is not confirmed.
Physical retail pricing in the UK has sat below the digital price for most of the game’s life, which is normal for PS5 first-party discs.
Subscriptions
| Service | Included | Detail | As of |
|---|---|---|---|
| PlayStation Plus Essential | No | Not a monthly game so far | March 2026 |
| PlayStation Plus Extra | No | Not in the Game Catalog | March 2026 |
| PlayStation Plus Premium | Not confirmed | A timed Game Trial has not been listed | March 2026 |
| Xbox Game Pass | No | Not on Xbox | March 2026 |
| EA Play / EA Play Pro | No | Not an EA title | March 2026 |
Sony’s first-party games typically reach the PS Plus Extra catalog a year or more after launch, so I would not expect it before late 2026 at the earliest. The only subscription that touches the game today is PS Plus for online play, which becomes relevant when Legends arrives. For comparison, services like ea play pro bundle launch-day access to their publisher’s games; Sony has never done that with PS Plus.
Updates, patches and post-launch additions
Sucker Punch has kept the update cadence steady since launch, and the big post-launch change so far is New Game+.
| Update | What it added | Date | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Day-one patch | Stability fixes, performance tuning | 2 October 2025 | Required for online trophy sync |
| New Game+ update | New Game+, extra trophies, new armor dyes and charms, additional difficulty tweaks | Autumn 2025 | Free; patch version not confirmed |
| Ongoing patches | Bug fixes, quest blockers, photo mode additions | October 2025 onward | Several small downloads |
| Legends co-op | Online co-op mode | 2026, date not confirmed | Free update |
New Game+ carries over gear, techniques and charms, raises enemy stats, and adds a vendor with exclusive cosmetics. A set of trophies tied to the mode was added at the same time but is not required for the Platinum, which is based on the launch trophy list.
Photo mode received expanded controls in a later patch, including additional lighting presets and the ability to hide the mount. Patch notes are published on the PlayStation Blog and in the game’s update history on the console, and I have not reproduced version numbers here because Sony’s numbering has been inconsistent between regions.
Accessibility and difficulty options
The game ships with four difficulty settings (Story, Normal, Hard, Lethal) and a separate set of accessibility toggles that work independently of them.
Options include simplified controls that reduce button-timing demands, aim assist strength, subtitle size and background opacity, colour-blind presets, a high-contrast mode for enemies and interactables, and the ability to turn off screen shake and the camera sway during horseback travel. Quick-time events can be made automatic.
Lethal difficulty is the one setting that meaningfully changes the experience: enemies die in one or two hits, and so does Atsu, which makes the weapon matchup system matter far more. It is available from the start, unlike Tsushima where it arrived in a patch.
FAQ
Is Ghost of Yōtei on PC or Xbox?
No. As of March 2026 the game is a PS5 exclusive with no announced PC version, no Xbox version and no PS4 version. Any specs you see for a PC build are speculation.
How long does the main story take?
About 25 hours on average for the story alone, around 40 hours with most side content, and 55 to 60 hours for a full completion. The non-linear hunt for the Yōtei Six means some players finish faster by skipping optional regions.
How many GB is Ghost of Yōtei on PS5?
Roughly 85 GB for the launch install, disc or digital, and the same on PS5 Pro. Patches have added more since, but Sony does not publish a running total, so I treat the current post-update size as not confirmed.
Does it have multiplayer?
Not at launch. The Ghost of Yōtei Legends co-op mode, with two-player story missions and four-player survival, is a free update scheduled for 2026. It will need PS Plus for online play. There is no local co-op.
What is the age rating?
ESRB Mature 17+ (Blood and Gore, Intense Violence, Language, Nudity) and PEGI 18 (Violence, Bad Language). There are no in-game purchases.
Do I need to play Ghost of Tsushima first?
No. The story is set in a different region more than three centuries later with a new protagonist, Atsu, and no shared characters. Tsushima references are limited to a few nods for returning players.
Is it on PS Plus?
Not as of March 2026. It is not in the Essential monthly lineup or the Extra catalog, and a Premium trial has not been listed. The standard edition costs $69.99 / £69.99 / €79.99.
